"Carlo. Please. It's the right thing to do..." Oceana says, looking at him pleadingly. "One life for the life of many, right?" She smiles sadly at him, before turning to Rosa. "Alright, where do we go?"

They began walking until they were near the chasm and heading upstairs. "We're headed to Candor headquarters. There are few of us working towards ridding the Divergent, but it will be done. Where are Angelique and Jake?" Asks Rosa. As soon as she says this, she throws the gun into the Chasm with a scream of rage. She falls to the ground pulling at her hair. She's resisting the simulation like Rowena had before! The little girl immediately shoots at Rosa and runs off, dropping the gun in the process. She must've been scared. Rosa is shaking and bleeding at the same time.
"I- I'm sorry. P- Please. It's them. The Candor. The simulation." She lets out another scream again. She then collapses to the ground. Ash runs over and checks for a pulse. She's still alive, but she's passed out. He picks her up and carries her over his shoulder.
"We have to stop everyone that's under the simulation and snap them out of that. After that, I'm headed to Candor Headquarters. Alone. Let's MOVE!" He says. |

Oceana began to run around the Dauntless headquarters, yelling out "hey, look at me! I'm a Divergent! Come chase me!"

Ash was carrying Rosa and running with a gun in his other hand. Rowena and Carlo had no idea where he got the gun.
As Oceana was running, there were two other people under the simulation. Everyone else was running from them or fighting back. The two others under the simulation were a Dauntless Boy that had to be about 18 years old, and one of the Dauntless Leaders. The dauntless boy was chasing Oceana, despite the fact her teasing sounded a bit funny. The Dauntless Leader went to shoot at Oceana but he was pushed in to the chasm by a Dauntless girl that was a bit younger than him. There was only one left under the simulation. The dauntless boy. He charged at Oceana. That's when Carlo came in. He still had the simulation serum in his wound. He was trying to fight it, but he couldn't. He grabbed the gun from Ash's hand and shot him in the chest. He collapsed to the ground. Ash was dead.

"Ash!" Oceana yelled, hesitating long enough for the Dauntless teen to grab her and put his gun to her head.
"Move and I shoot," he says, cocking the gun back.

As the gun is held to Oceana's head, a bullet hits the Dauntless teen in the back. He yells in pain and falls to the ground. Standing behind him is Jake- the instructor. Pushing the body of the fallen Dauntless teen out of the way, he aims his gun at Carlo.
"Carlo, you make one more move against us, and I shoot you. I just saved your girlfriend, so I don't think I'd be going crazy and shooting people anymore, alright? You're the last one under the simulation." Jake says, cocking back his gun. He aims it at Carlo, who drops the gun and runs to Oceana, hugging her.
"I'm so sorry! What did I do? I can't believe I- I killed Ash. He didn't deserve it." Carlo said. He was shaken. He didn't know what to do. He had been trying to save the Divergent, and in the end he ended up being the one who killed one. |

"The simulation works differently on some people. It's okay." Oceana rubbed his back as he hugged her. "Thanks for saving me, Jake."

Jake nods. He heads over to Rosa to make sure she's alright. She's still breathing- and bleeding. Jake lifts her up and rushes her to the infirmary.
Carlo is still sobbing. He awoke from a simulation a murderer. He hadn't even known he did it until he was out of the simulation. "It's another person who's death is my fault!" He sobs. He couldn't help it. He feels like he was the cause of three deaths now. His brother Eagle, the instructor Rax, and now his friend Ash. |

"Stop blaming yourself!" Oceana said, grabbing him sternly on the shoulders. "This wasn't your fault. This was the Candor. Okay? You were a blind pawn in their game of chess, that's all. And you know what? I'm going to change that."

Carlo nods slowly. He just wanted something that he could believe. He wasn't sure if Oceana was just trying to comfort him or if she really meant it. He walks away from Oceana's grasp and heads to the infirmary. No matter how much Carlo dislikes Rosa, he still wants her to be okay. She had to go through the simulation too. When he gets down there, Rosa is awake, surprisingly. She asks if she can talk to Carlo for a moment alone. The others leave the room and shut the door behind them. Honestly, with Rosa being in so much pain, she wouldn't be able to do any of her messed up jealousy tricks. This gave Carlo a safe sense of security at first. Then he starts talking to Rosa. They both say how horrible it was to be under the simulation and what they were forced to do. It had been so hard to fight it. Then Carlo realizes he and Rosa actually agreed on something. He gives her a quick kiss and walks away, finger to his lips so she won't tell anyone.
He felt horrible after that. He was disloyal to Oceana by kissing Rosa. As long as she doesn't find out, he thought, he'd be fine. Then he realized he wouldn't be able to live with himself if that were the case. Then, he takes his gun out of its holster and closes his eyes, then shoots himself in the foot. He yells in pain, but he felt he deserved it. Tears in his eyes, he hobbles over to the door. |

"Why did you shoot your foot?" Oceana asked, having turned the corner the second before he shot. "Seriously, do you want to ruin your foot?"

"Don't act like I don't deserve it." Says Carlo. He had done too much. Too much wrong. He felt like pitching himself off the edge of the chasm, but he knew he couldn't. One, Oceana and the others would never respect him. They'd think he was stupid. Secondly, he would never forgive himself, even in death. Finally, he loved life too much even to do that. He loved Oceana. |
