The Divergent the Candor managed to find among the factionless and the Abnegation were brought in to Candor's Headquarters. They were seated and one at a time brought to the center of the room to sit in the chair and be questioned with truth serum. Carlo was finally awake. He goes to the center of the room and sits in the chair.
"You may all ask him questions, one at a time. Then the Candor will do the same." Says Rowena's mother. |

Oceana sat there, watching with sadly. She kept silent, and was sitting three seats away from Carlo. She constantly looked at him, as though she didn't want him there.

Going around the room, the other Divergent are forced to ask one question each.
"What happened to your foot?" Asked a factionless Divergent.
"It got shot." Replies Carlo.
"Who shot you?" Questions an Abnegation.
"I did." Carlo answers.
"Why?" Asks another Abnegation.
"I deserved it." Says Carlo.
Then it's Oceana's turn to ask a question. |

"Why do you bother your time with me?" Oceana asks. "You can have any other girl in Dauntless with your looks, but why bother with me?"

This wasn't a forced or simple answer. He answered this question with ease.
"Oceana. I love you. Sometimes I feel like I don't deserve you, but you taught me to be Dauntless. If it weren't for the knife fight on the first day, I never would've even had to guts to talk to you after the first portion of initiation. You're perfect, and you're beautiful. Those scars make you strong and so does all you've been through. I can connect to you and you understand me. You know how I feel when I talk to you. You put yourself in dangerous situations to protect me. Though with saying this, I feel guilt. I have to admit this, and it isn't the truth serum talking. I deserved to be shot in the foot when I did so. I hope you forgive me. I punished myself because I kissed Rosa willingly. I'm sorry." He says. A tear rolls down his cheek and he looks at the floor.
"Thank you for your honesty." Say the Candor together. |

She sits back down and gives him a smile, her day somehow brightened. She pulls her knees up to her chest and wait for the questioning from the other Divergence so that she can hear a preview of what she will be asked, which she desperately needs.

Rowena's mother asks Carlo a few more questions.
"What were you doing with the factionless?" She asks.
"I was trying to escape from Erudite Headquarters." He answers.
"What were you doing there?" Rowena's mother questions.
"I was saving Rowena Queen's daughter and escaping from Dauntless that was slowly being attacked." Carlo responds.
"Do you have the metal simulation disk inside you at this moment?" Was the next question.
"Yes. The Erudite and Candor inserted it in to the wound on my foot." Carlo answers.
"What is your full name?" Was the following question.
"Carlo Devon Hairston." The response was immediate.
"What are the factions of your Divergence?"
"Dauntless and Candor."
"Anyone, feel free to ask any other questions."
A Candor boy speaks up. "What is your faction of origin and who are they siding with?"
"Amity. There allies are unknown to me." Carlo answers.
"Anyone else?" Rowena's mother asks. |

"Thank you for your honesty." The Candor say in unison once more. Then, Oceana is called up and given the truth serum. The first one to ask a question is Carlo.
"What would you do for me when this war is over? After this is all sorted out, if we're both still alive, what would you want to do? Where would we live?" He asks. It was a question that might've sounded all too simple, but it really meant something to him. |

"I don't know, actually. I take things one at a time. But I guess I might want to get married, have kids, stuff like that. It's hard to make those major life decisions when you're in the middle of a war."

"Do you have any experience working on serums such as simulation serums?"

"Umm... Dauntless, now that I think about it. Rowena was my best friend from Erudite and Rosa kind of hated my guts during initation. No, I was unaware of Jake's death. I was born and raised factionless until the age of ten when I got shot in the back of my left shoulder, but after that just an hour or so ago was my first contact with the factionless since then. I had no previous experience with simulations and serums before the aptitude test and my initation. My faction of origin is factionless, but I was adopted by an Erudite woman under the grounds of experimenting with how one reacts to a sudden change. Any other questions?"

"What is your full name? Are you aware of Carlo having you-know-what with Rosa Greenwind?"
Carlos's mouth drops at the question. This Candor girl was lying!

"My full name is Oceana Samantha Johnson. And it's really cute that you think he would do that! Rosa wouldn't be able to keep her mouth shut abou that for five minutes. And when would he have the time to do that, anyway?"
