Carlo reluctantly goes to the infirmary. As they are on their way to the infirmary, there is an announcement for everyone to go to the chasm.

"Alright. Lets go to the chasm." Says Carlo. When they arrive at the Chasm, Rax is being held over it, one person holding his hands to keep him suspended over it.
"It's your choice now. You've been here ten minutes. Either we pull you back up and you become factionless for repeatedly harming initiates or we drop you." Says the Dauntless man holding him over the Chasm.
Then, Rax closes his eyes, and lets go. Carlo looks away as Rax's body falls towards the rocks and running water in the Chasm. Rosa cries out as Rax falls. Carlo runs off to be somewhere else. He didn't want to see the 20-year-old man he made fall to his death simply because he insulted the girl he liked. Though it was already over.

"He chose death. He chose to love Rosa. And he chose to harm you. You have to understand that first. Second, you have to understand a possible reason why he chose death over factionless. The factionless live in what some Dauntless view as a state worse than death. They carry diseases that you would normally get vaccinated for yearly from the Erudite. They barely ever get treated for wounds. The Dauntless, a few years back, guarded the factionless section of the city heavily, to ensure that none of them got out and started spreading disease. Only time they would be let out was to do their jobs. They barely get by with the pay. Even though the Abnegation ended them guarding the factionless, some Dauntless still fear them and hate the mere thought of joining their ranks. He might of wanted to pull a Romeo be all like 'if I can't have Rosa, then I accept death like an old friend!'"

Carlo nods. A small sigh escapes his lips and he smiles a bit. "Thanks Oceana. I guess I didn't really realize that. I never really have had anything against the Factionless. One of my best friends failed his initiation and became Factionless. I miss him, but I just never had realized that the Factionless had it that bad." He says. "I'm sorry." He says. He hugs Oceana, resting his head on her shoulder. Even though they were just close friends, he was glad to have a shoulder to cry on.

"He failed the initiation last year. He wasn't able to conquer his fear landscape. We still have to do ours. I'm scared. I have too many fears. One of them- if they found out that fear- something might happen to me." Carlo says. "I have to be as brave as I can and I need your help with that."

"Well, remember hearing about that war between the factions that happened years ago? After we rebuilt, it went back to the way it was before. The factions still had grudges on each other from the war and a lot of people are still scared of and hate the Divergent. That's the problem. I know I can trust you with this. I'm basically trusting you with my life. I'm Divergent, and they want the Divergent dead again. That's the fear. That they'll find out about me." Carlo said. Then he knew what was going to happen. She was going be scared of him. Or mad. Or turn him in. He knew he shouldn't have said anything.

Oceana, though, is completely unfazed by the comment on Divergence. "So, they want them dead again, huh?" She bites her bottom lip and thinks. "Maybe when they start to bring it up in your fear, cut them off and just fight them, or give a speech about how it doesn't matter."
